September’s security news was dominated by attacks by the Iraqi Islamic Resistance. The Islamic State was also active during the month but still at a low level.
The Islamic State attempted to be more active in Iraq during September but failed to make a real mark. There were 7 incidents by the group which was the same amount as the month before. That tied for second most during the year but there were 7 incidents in May and August as well. The group is only averaging around 1 incident per week which is nothing.
In September the group carried out a bombing in Baghdad, an IED and ambush in Kirkuk, two bombings in Ninewa one of which was old leftover ordinance, and there was an explosive device and a gun battle during a police raid in Salahaddin. That meant there were only 5 actual attacks during the month.
All together these incidents left 4 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 5 civilians dead along with 1 Peshmerga, 4 Hashd al-Shaabi, 8 ISF and 3 civilians wounded.
In comparison there were 29 incidents by the Iraqi Resistance against Israel. The previous high was 20 in May. The factions picked up attacks after Israel began assassinating Hezbollah members and attacking Lebanon. Before there was only about 1-2 attacks per week but then starting on September 22 there have been operations every day.
There were also rockets fired at Baghdad Airport in the middle of the month. The pro-Iran groups main interest remains in forcing the United States out of the country and would much rather be attacking them. The problem is the Sudani government and Iran negotiated a ceasefire in February which has largely been maintained despite occasional breaches like this one.
