The start of March was another reminder that the Islamic State is in its death throes in Iraq. It remains barely active in the country.
From March 1-7 there were 3 incidents by the Islamic State. That compared to 8 the last week of February. Since the start of the year 8 of 9 weeks have seen security incidents in single digits. That continues the trend started in 2022 when the majority of weeks had less than 10 attacks.
The week’s incidents took place in Diyala (2) and Salahaddin (1) and left 10 dead and 4 wounded. 1 Hashd al-Shaabi and 9 civilians were killed and 1 Hashd and 3 civilians were injured. There were 12 casualties in Diyala and 2 in Salahaddin.
Diyala witnessed the biggest incident of the week when the Islamic State attacked a village in the Muqdadiya district in the center of the province. It shot up a house and then set off an IED as people approached. In total 8 people were killed and 3 wounded. Another person was assassinated in Khalis in the north.
In Salahaddin a Hashd patrol was hit with an IED that killed one and left another wounded.
As usual all three IS incidents were in rural areas of the country. Those are the only areas the insurgency operates in these days because there were few people there and little government presence.
