The Islamic State remains barely active in Iraq. Violence remains at an all-time low in the country. Ramadan is nearing however so that could change.
There were only two security incidents reported in Iraq from March 15-21. There were 2 incidents the week before and 3 the first week of March. 10 of 11 weeks this year have seen incidents in single digits. That continues the trend set in 2022.
In Baghdad’s Tarmiya in the north there was a shootout with insurgents that left 1 Hashd al-Shaabi dead. The district has become one of the few consistently violent areas in Iraq. In Kirkuk an IED hit a car full of Hashd during a security operation that left 3 wounded.
Ramadan is beginning which has traditionally been when the Islamic State starts an offensive each year. This will be a sign of just how low the insurgency has sunk. Can it pick up its operations in 2023? If it does how many attacks can it carry out? Last year incidents spiked to 40 incidents for one week. We’ll see what happens this time around.
