The security situation in Iraq was largely unchanged from April to May 2023. There were nearly the same number of incidents during each month.
In May there were 15 security incidents reported in the media. That compared to 16 in April. In 2022 there was an average of 40.2 incidents per month. In 2023 that has dropped to 16.4 a more than 50% decline.
May’s incidents took place in Anbar (1), Baghdad (2), Diyala (4), Kirkuk (1), Ninewa (5), and Salahaddin (2).
They left 8 dead and 14 wounded. 1 member of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), 3 civilians and 4 Hashd al-Shaabi lost their lives while another 2 ISF, 5 Hashd and 7 civilians were injured. All six provinces with casualties were in single digits. Baghdad had the most with 7 dead and wounded.
During the first week of the month there were 2 incidents. During the second week there were 6 incidents with one being an old IED going off leaving just 5 actual attacks. In the third week there were 3 incidents. The fourth week there were 3 incidents with another old IED involved meaning there were only 2 attacks. 1 of those incidents, a sticky bomb in western Diyala was offensive. In the last three days of the month there were 2 more incidents, 2 IEDs in southeast Diyala. Those were offensive in nature as well. Out of the 15 incidents during the month one took place in a city, Kirkuk. That was very rare as the insurgency has lost its networks into Iraq’s urban centers. Everything else was more traditional taking place in the isolated rural areas of the nation. In those areas the Islamic State is solely focused upon survival. Almost all the attacks it carries out are meant to keep civilians and the government out. That’s the reason why offensive actions are so rare.
