There were 3 security incidents in Iraq again during the second week of September, the same number as the week before.
There were 2 incidents by the Islamic State. In Baghdad an IED killed 1 soldier and 2 civilians and wounded 2 other civilians. In Kirkuk insurgents ambushed an army vehicles killing 2 soldiers and injuring 3 more.
IS is trying to be more active in Iraq. In June and July there was violence only 2 out of 8 weeks. Since August there have been incidents every week but one. Still the total number of attacks is miniscule. From August 1-September 14 there have been an average of 1.3 incidents per week or only 0.1 incidents per day. Those numbers are no different than the annual averages.
Pro-Iran groups fired two rockets at a U.S. logistics center at the Baghdad Airport. These factions are unhappy with the slow pace of withdrawal talks with the Americans.
Iraq’s Defense Minister Thabit al-Abbasi in an interview said that there is a preliminary agreement for the U.S. to pull out of Baghdad by September 2025 with remaining forces staying in Kurdistan until September 2026. This is a far too long timeline for Tehran’s allies. It’s perfect for the Sudani government that did not want the Americans to leave. Ironically Iran hasn’t voiced any opposition since its main priority is stability in Iraq so it’s actually against its friends carrying out attacks.
