Security In Iraq, May 1-7, 2024

The first week of May saw no insurgent activity in Iraq but continued attacks by pro-Iran groups.

 

From May 1-7 there were three security incidents all by pro-Iran groups. They carried out two drone strikes and a cruise missile attack upon Israel. None of these were confirmed. These factions have been claiming attacks upon Israel since January and they have increased since then. This is probably another sign that the Islamic Resistance is growing weary of withdrawal talks over U.S. forces and wants to act out as a result.

 

There was no violence by the Islamic State. This was the fourth straight week where the insurgency was inactive in the country. There have been 8 weeks total this year when there were no incidents as IS continues to fade from Iraq.
