After a short spike in attacks during the start of December security incidents went back to their norm during the second week of the month.
There were 6 incidents in Iraq reported in the media from December 8-14. The week before there were 12 likely in response to the announcement that the Islamic State’s leader had been killed. The insurgency is at such a low level however it couldn’t keep up that pace and returned to the norm. For 31 of the 46 weeks of the year incidents have been in single digits.
IS incidents took place in Baghdad (1), Kirkuk (2), Ninewa (2), and Salahaddin (1).
They left 7 dead and 8 wounded. 3 civilians and 4 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) were killed and 3 ISF and 5 civilians were injured.
All 6 IS incidents were defensive in nature. Two more suicide bombers were killed in a sweep in Salahaddin. The week before 4 others were dispatched. Again, because the group’s leader was declared dead it likely wanted to carry out a spectacular attack. That failed however.
