Security In Iraq May 8-14, 2023

Violence went up in Iraq during the second week of May to the highest level since the end of February. The insurgency however remains at its lowest level since 2003.

There were 6 security incidents reported in the Iraqi media from May 8-14. That compared to just 2 the week before. 6 was the most incidents in one week since 8 during the week of February 22-28. Attacks have been in single digits for 17 of the 18 weeks in 2023.

The incidents took place in Baghdad (1), Kirkuk (1), Ninewa (3), and Salahaddin (1).

They left 4 dead and 3 wounded. 1 Hashd al-Shaabi, 1 member of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 2 civilians were killed and 3 civilians were injured. Baghdad saw 1 dead, Kirkuk had 2 wounded, Ninewa witnessed 3 casualties and 1 in Salahaddin.

There was a home invasion in Tarmiya in northern Baghdad that left 1 civilian dead. Since the end of 2022 this district has re-emerged as an IS hotbed. It has been a long time insurgent base.

2 people were wounded by a grenade in Kirkuk.

In Ninewa an old IED killed one civilian and left another wounded, while in the Nimrod district 1 Hashd was killed in a security sweep and IS attacked a Hashd unit there as well.

A checkpoint was shot at resulting in 1 dead policeman in the Samarra district of Salahaddin.

None of the attacks were offensive in nature and all were in rural and isolated areas of the country. Those are the only places the insurgency is still active as it has fallen to its lowest point.
