Security In Iraq Dec 15-21, 2023

The security situation changed in Iraq during the third week of December because the Islamic State was more active than pro-Iran groups.

There were a total of 6 security incidents reported in Iraq from December 15-21.

Two of those were by groups linked with Iran. They fired rockets at the Ain Al-Asad airbase in Anbar twice. This is a common target because it houses U.S. troops.

The other 4 incidents were by the Islamic State. The previous two weeks in the month the insurgency only carried out 4 attacks total. The last time there were 4 attacks in one week by IS was during the 1st week of August showing how far the group has declined.

In Anbar IS attacked a checkpoint in the Rutba district. A Hashd member was killed when a security tower was assaulted in Tarmiya in northern Baghdad. Finally, in Salahaddin an infiltration attempt was foiled by the security forces and there was a shooting in the Samarra district that left two police wounded. There appear to be common IS tactics to test security and intimidate the government forces so they stay out of insurgents areas.
