Violence in Iraq took a dramatic drop during the first week of February.
There was only one security incident reported. That came from the Islamic Resistance which claimed a drone strike on Israel. Attacks on Israel started in January and there have been a total of 8 reported so far.
The reason for the lack of attacks was a truce by Kataib Hezbollah announced on January 30. That came after 3 American soldiers were killed by a drone strike in Jordan by the Resistance. Iran reportedly negotiated the deal in the hopes of de-escalating things while Kataib Hezbollah wanted to portray itself as a victim if the U.S. retaliated.
That came on February 7 as a US drone strike killed a Kataib Hezbollah commander in Baghdad Wisam Mohammed Sabir al-Saedi. He was accused of planning attacks on US forces. He was also responsible for assassinating members of the protest movement from 2019-20.
There were no attacks by the Islamic State during the week. This was a change since the group seemed like it was trying to make a small return. For four out of five weeks from December 15 to January 21 the insurgents carried out four attacks per week. Then the last week of January there was only 1 incident and none during the first week of February. It shows how fragile IS is. It simply doesn’t have the manpower or resources to be any kind of real threat to Iraq anymore.
