The Islamic State made a return to Iraq during the last week of May. Pro-Iran groups continued attacks upon Israel during the Gaza War.
After being largely inactive for weeks the Islamic State was responsible for 4 security incidents in Iraq from May 22-28. In Anbar the Iraqi forces set up an ambush for some insurgents that led to a gun battle that killed 1 member of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and wounded another. In Diyala an IED exploded near a checkpoint. When the security forces arrived to investigate they were hit with a second bomb. In total 2 Hashd al-Shaabi were killed, another injured along with 1 civilian and 5 soldiers. Finally, in Salahaddin there were further bombings in Tuz Kharmato and Baiji that left 2 soldiers and 6 civilians dead and 4 soldiers wounded.
That last time there were 4 or more incidents by the insurgents was back in March when there were 7 incidents the second week of the month. The 23 casualties were the most since the third week of December 2022.
The Iraqi Islamic Resistance claimed two more attacks upon Israel with cruise missiles and drones. So far in May there have been 19 such incidents. With the ceasefire still in place with the US in Iraq pro-Iran groups have been focusing upon Israel.
