The Islamic State remains dormant in Iraq during the new year. Some old ordinance exploded leading to casualties and there was a clash with the security forces during a security sweep in January.
During the first week of January an old IED detonated in Ninewa killing 1 civilian. The following week the same thing happened in Salahaddin wounding 3 civilians. There are a lot of bombs and other war material strewn across Iraq so these kinds of incidents happen quite often especially in rural areas.
On January 21 a security sweep by the army in northern Baghdad’s Tarmiya district led to a large number of casualties. First, soldiers came across a group of insurgents leading to a gun battle that left 4 soldiers dead. During the same operation an insurgent ammunition dump exploded killing 4 more soldiers and injuring 5 others. That was the largest number of dead and wounded in Iraq since the first week of October.
Still there were no actual attacks by the Islamic State during the first three weeks of the new year. The last time there was one was back in mid-November 2024. For all intense and purposes the insurgency is dead in Iraq.
