Security In Iraq Jun 14-21, 2025

In the middle of June there were two security incidents in Anbar province likely related to the on going Israel-Iran conflict.

On June 13 a drone was shot down outside the Ain Al-Asad airbase in Anbar. The next week on June 15 a missile was also intercepted by the defense systems at the base.

Ain Al-Asad houses U.S. troops and was often targeted by pro-Iran groups when they were carrying out attacks in support of the Palestinians. Those operations began in large numbers in October 2023 and lasted until November 2024 when they ceased after Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Lebanon.

Tehran’s allies have largely been silent since then due to the new Trump administration. When Trump returned to office the U.S. began threatening sanctions and attacks upon pro-Iran groups. Many leaders went into hiding as a result. Occasionally they told the U.S. to leave Iraq and that their troops would be attacked but did nothing substantive.

That pattern was repeated when Israel began attacking Iran. Some groups warned that they would carry out operations against American targets if the U.S. got involved in the conflict.

The big question is what these factions will do now that the United States has bombed Iran. Will they support their sponsor by launching drones and rockets at Americans in Iraq or will they stay quiet? If they do act will it be something symbolic or be more serious and sustained? It will likely be the former since Iran has so few assets left and can’t afford to lose them.
