The United States is threatening a new wave of sanctions if the pro-Tehran Resistance does not disarm. At the same time Trump’s desire to get out of the Iran War may mean Washington may not push the issue much more.
The U.S. has supposedly warned Iraq that it could face a new set of sanctions if the Resistance does not give up its arms. They might target institutions and companies instead of individuals and armed factions as in the past.
This is in response to the Zaidi government moving away from its September 30 deadline for the Iran aligned groups to put their weapons under state control.
On the other hand the White House may be putting Iraq on the back burner. That’s because the president wants to get out of the Iran War. It’s been reported that Trump is thinking of declaring the conflict over and walking away. As a result Iraq could be yesterday’s news for the administration beyond perhaps threats and some punitive action.
From the start Iraq has been pushed by members of Trump’s national security team as a way to pressure Iran. The president himself has not shown that much interest at all. Those officials are now learning what it means to work for a president who has no strategy, focus nor basic understanding of the world.
