Security In Iraq Feb 8-14, 2021

Security remained at a low level in Iraq during the second week of February. There were just 11 incidents total. Three were by pro-Iran groups leaving just eight by the Islamic State. IS has been ramping down its operations since the winter.

 

Pro-Iran groups bombed three convoys carrying supplies for the United States. Two were in south Baghdad and one was in Diwaniya. These organizations have been keeping up a steady flow of such incidents since November and February looks to be no different. Front groups always take responsibility but they are usually connected to Kataib Hezbollah or Asaib Ahl Al-Haq.

 

That left 8 incidents by IS which were spread across Baghdad (1), Kirkuk (1), Salahaddin (1), and Diyala (5).

 

4 people died and 8 were wounded during the week. They were all from the police and army. Since the spring the militants have been targeting the security forces leading them to be most of the casualties each week.

 

An IED was dismantled in Zafaraniya in southern Baghdad. IS has gone back to a few bombings and shootings each month in the capital province almost always in the southern and northern villages.

 

A soldier was killed, an assassination attempt on an ISF member failed, some electricity towers were attacked and two checkpoints were assaulted in Diyala. Two of the attacks happened in the north while the other three were in the Khanaqin districts in the northeast. Most violence is in the latter while the north is only occasionally hit even though it is a major base for the insurgents.

 

The Federal Police were attacked in the Daquq district of southern Kirkuk. That left 3 police dead and two more wounded. This province used to be the second most violent in the country but that has dropped off during the winter.

 

5 soldiers including an officer were wounded by an IED in the Shirqat district in Salahaddin. Like the rest of the country there have been few incidents in the governorate recently.
