Violence in Iraq declined in June 2021 after the Islamic State’s short lived Ramadan offensive ended. Attacks by pro-Iran groups have also gone down since April.
There was a total of 83 security incidents recorded in Iraq in June. That was down from 113 in May and 107 in April. In March there were 79 incidents.
Those led to 36 killed and 87 wounded. 2 Hashd al-Shaabi, 16 civilians and 18 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) died and 1 foreign national, 11 Hashd, 25 ISF and 50 civilians were injured. Baghdad had the most casualties with 47. That was a huge change from the usual status quo that sees Diyala with the most dead and wounded.
There were 17 incidents by pro-Iran groups. 10 convoys carrying supplies for the U.S. were hit by IEDs in Anbar (1), Baghdad (1), Basra (1), Dhi Qar (2), Diwaniya (2), Muthanna (1) and Salahaddin (2). There were also drone attacks upon Anbar’s Ain Al-Asad base, Baghdad International Airport twice, and in Irbil province. Rockets were fired at Ain al-Asad and Balad Air Base in Salahaddin. Some missiles were intercepted heading towards Baghdad Airport, IEDs were dismantled in Baghdad and Dhi Qar, and rockets were discovered in Diyala. Attacks by these factions peaked at 26 in April and have since gone down since. These groups are attempting to limit the U.S. presence in Iraq which has worked as the Americans are now focused upon protecting their forces rather than working with the Iraqi security forces. They ultimately want the U.S. out of Iraq and to give concessions to Tehran.
62 incidents were by the Islamic State. There were 89 in May, 80 in April and 59 in March. June’s attacks took place across Anbar (2), Babil (1), Baghdad (10), Diyala (19), Irbil (1), Kirkuk (14), Ninewa (6) and Salahaddin (9). Violence was up the previous two months as the insurgents launched their annual Ramadan offensive. This year’s was probably the shortest since 2003.
Anbar, Babil and Ninewa continued to see few attacks. Anbar had a car bomb dismantled which was likely heading for another province and a checkpoint was attacked in the Rutba district. An IED went off in the Jurf al-Sakhr district in northeast Babil. Finally there was a shooting, four IEDs, and power towers were blown up in Ninewa. Anbar and Ninewa are logistics hubs for IS. Jurf al-Sakhr is a large Hashd base with a military cordon and gets hit about 1-3 times a month because of the plethora of targets.
The militants have re-initiated its operations in Baghdad. Attacks there have gone from 4 in April to 7 in May and 10 in June the most since May 2020. The main cell is in Tarmiya in the north. There are usually small shootings and bombings there. On June 3 however an IED exploded in Khadimiya leaving 3 dead and 16 wounded and there was another in Sadr City where 15 were injured. These were the first attacks within the city proper since a car bomb in Sadr City in April. It appears that IS is now moving south as well as an IED went off there and there was an attempt upon a sheikh as well. It will be interesting to see if this is a new concerted campaign or just sporadic attacks.
Kirkuk and Salahaddin are secondary fronts where attacks wildly fluctuate. In Kirkuk attacks went from just 3 in January to a high of 20 in May before going to 14 in June. There was one kidnapping, two towns were attacked, along with 3 checkpoints and 9 gun battles. There were also three attacks upon the power network. Salahaddin was similar with 3 incidents in February rising to 16 in April and then 13 in May and 9 in June. There were just two shootouts there but four assaults on the electricity grid. IS has long standing camps in southern Kirkuk and the Hamrin Mountains of Salahaddin, but it appears their priority is not using them as much as rebuilding their cadres.
Diyala saw a large drop in violence. Attacks went from 31 in May to 19 in June. There was one gun battle, 2 kidnappings, 4 checkpoints were assaulted, and some power towers were blown up with two other attempts foiled. As usual most incidents were in Muqdadiya in the center and Khanaqin in the northeast. One town was also attacked in the Azim district in the north leading to 9 casualties. IS is hitting this area a few times a month now. Diyala is the center of the insurgency. It usually has the most incidents. Even then IS is focused upon creating de facto control of rural areas of Muqdadiya and Khanaqin and keeping out locals and the security forces rather than many offensive operations.
