The Islamic State has been on a steady decline since its defeat in 2017. Today it is barely able to operate in Iraq. That was shown in the second week of February when there was only once incident which wasn’t even an attack.
At the start of the week an old IED went off in the Mosul district which wounded 2 civilians. That was the only incident during the week.
The previous week there were 4 incidents by the Islamic State. For 5 of the 6 weeks of 2023 IS incidents have been in single digits. That follows the same pattern as 2022.
The militants are isolated in rural areas of Baghdad, Diyala, Kirkuk, Ninewa and Salahaddin. Its sole goal is to survive which it can likely do for years from now because it operates in places where there are few people and the government is barely present.
