The Islamic State remained an insignificant force in Iraq during the third week of February. There were four security incidents from February 15-21 compared to just 1 the week before. 6 of the 7 weeks in 2023 have seen IS incidents in single digits.
The incidents took place in Baghdad (3) and Diyala (1) and left 4 soldiers dead and 8 soldiers wounded.
The biggest incident took place in Baghdad’s northern Tarmiya district during a security sweep. Soldiers found a group of IS fighters and got into a gun battle ending with one of the militants detonating a suicide vest. 4 soldiers were killed including the regimental commander and 7 more were wounded. In another part of Tarmiya a sniper wounded a soldier and there was mortar fire on Camp Taji which is nearby. Tarmiya has become the main trouble spot in Iraq over the last few months. There are constant incidents there. It has been an insurgent base for years which the Iraqi forces appear unable to clear out.
The final attack took place in Diyala’s Muqdadiya district in the center of the province when a checkpoint was shot at. This used to be the main area of operation for the insurgency but it has fallen off in recent months as the Islamic State collapsed during 2022.
