Security In Iraq Apr 15-21, 2024

The Islamic State remained quiet in Iraq for the second consecutive week while a mysterious explosion at a Hashd base led to another attack upon Israel.

 

There were no incidents reported by the Islamic State in Iraq from April 15-21. There were no attacks the previous week as well. In 2024, 6 out of 15 weeks have seen no activity by the insurgency. This is another sign of the decline of the organization.

 

On April 20 there was a mysterious explosion at a Hashd base in Babil province. One Hashd was killed and 7 more plus a soldier were injured as a result. The US denied any responsibility leaving Israel as the likely suspect. It could have been an accident however as Hashd facilities have witnessed similar explosions before due to poor storage of munitions.

 

The Iraqi Islamic Resistance announced a drone strike on Israel the next day. This is the fifth straight week the Resistance has claimed such an operation. These are rarely confirmed.
