Violence in Iraq during the fourth week of April 2024 was dominated by pro-Iran groups. The Islamic State was inactive once again.
On April 26 there was a drone strike on the Khor Mor natural gas field in Sulaymaniya. 4 Yemeni workers were killed and others injured. Work at the facility was halted as a result. No one claimed responsibility but the facility has been attacked before by pro-Iran factions. The last time was in January 2024.
Also on April 22 it was reported that during the previous day the Ain Al-Asad airbase in Anbar was hit with a drone while rockets were fired from Zummar in western Ninewa at an American base in eastern Syria.
The Iraqi Islamic Resistance said those two incidents were not authorized by the organization. That likely meant Tehran disapproved so the Resistance had to claim it was some rogue groups. The Resistance says it is carrying out attacks because of America’s support for Israel in the Gaza War but it’s really because they want the U.S. out of Iraq. The government has started negotiations on that topic but it will be a very long process which some factions obviously don’t have the patience for. Some have become so restless they’re even attacking Kurdistan even though it means nothing politically at this point.
On the other hand, this was the third straight week with no activity by the Islamic State. There have been no attacks by the group for four of the last five weeks and 7 of the 16 weeks this year. The insurgency is disappearing from the country.
