Both the Islamic State and the Iraqi Islamic Resistance were active in Iraq during the first week of August.
In Diyala the Islamic State attempted to assassinate an army colonel in Khalis in the north with an IED. The colonel, his bodyguard and a civilian were wounded in the incident.
Starting in the middle of July the Islamic Resistance returned to attacking Ain al-Assad airbase in Anbar that houses U.S. troops. 3 such incidents occurred during the month.
The Biden administration quickly retaliated with a strike upon Kataib Hezbollah’s base in Babil’s Jurf al-Sakhr which Washington claimed was the source for the assaults upon Ain al-Assad. 15 people were killed and wounded which included the death of a Houthi from Yemen and the wounding of a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards who were said to be involved in drone operations.
The Resistance responded with two rocket attacks upon Assad base on August 5 and 6. In the first incident 5 U.S. soldiers and 2 American contractors were injured.
Whether things will continue to escalate is yet to be seen. It does highlight two main issues however. The first is that for all the talk about the War in Gaza the pro-Iran groups in Iraq are following their own agenda of attempting to force the U.S. out of Iraq. Second, this puts the Sudani government in a precarious situation as it wants to maintain good relations with Washington but the ruling coalition includes many of the groups carrying out attacks. It is in constant talks with the factions to try to stop them from resorting to violence and was able to negotiate a ceasefire in February with the help of Tehran but that has obviously fallen apart as the Resistance wants the Americans to leave immediately and has grown impatient with negotiations.
