Security In Iraq Aug 15-21, 2024

There were two security incidents in Iraq from August 15-21.

In Diyala an IED went off at a checkpoint which wounded two Hashd. This occurred during the Arbaeen pilgrimage and the Iraqi government bent over backwards to claim this had no effect upon pilgrims.

So far this month the Islamic State has been active each week. That has only amounted to 4 incidents overall. That is a change however.

In July the insurgency only carried out attacks during one week. The same thing happened in June.

The Iraqi Resistance claimed a drone strike upon Israel as well. There hadn’t been such an attack for a month.

The Resistance has been saber rattling saying it will coordinate with Iran and other resistance groups in the region to retaliate against Israel for a series of assassinations. It also says the truce with the United States in Iraq is over and the Americans will be targeted too. Ahl Al-Kahf for instance which is a front group for pro-Iran Hashd factions said that when Arbaeen is over it will take action.

The Iraqi government on the other hand claimed that it talked the Biden Administration out of striking pro-Iran groups after they launched missiles at U.S. forces at the Ain Al-Assad airbase in Anbar twice at the start of August.

Everyone appears to be on edge waiting for something to happen.
