Security In Iraq Sep 15-21, 2024

Both the Islamic State and the Iraqi Islamic Resistance carried out operations during the third week of September in Iraq. Both are trying to make their presence known but at a very low level.

 

There were 3 incidents by the Islamic State during the week. That compared to 2 the week before and 2 the 1^st week of the month.

 

Since the start of August there has been insurgent violence 6 out of 7 weeks. The two months before that there was no activity by the Islamic State 6 out of 8 weeks. IS is trying to make a return to Iraq but there are so few incidents it is having no impact upon the country and is little noticed.

 

In western Ninewa an IED exploded wounding 4 Hashd. In Salahaddin there was another bombing that hit a patrol in the east in Tuz Kharmato that injured 1 Peshmerga while during a raid upon an IS house in Samarra shooting broke out leading 2 police to be wounded. That means there were only 2 actual attacks by the militants during the week.

 

The Iraqi Islamic Resistance claimed two more drone strikes upon Israel. The week before the group fired rockets upon a U.S. facility at the Baghdad Airport and then there was another drone attack on Israel the first week of the month.

 

Activity by pro-Iran groups has dropped since peaking in May. With the truce with the U.S. still largely holding despite a few violations Tehran’s friends have little to do to show their militancy other than to launch an occasional drone attack upon Israel. This is completely symbolic and has no real impact. The factions would much rather be attacking the Americans because that is their real priority but they have been told not to by Iran to maintain stability in Iraq.
