The Islamic State’s attempt at a comeback in Iraq faltered during October. It also seemed like Baghdad and Tehran’s pressure on the Iraqi Resistance finally came to fruition as they cut back their attacks upon Israel.
From October 8-14 there were no incidents by the Islamic State in Iraq. The week before there were 3 but then none the final week of September.
Starting in September the insurgency tried to return to weekly attacks. It wasn’t able to maintain that after three weeks. This is another sign that the militants are largely dead in the country. IS has not been able to rebuild either its following or networks to be any kind of threat.
Attacks by the Islamic Resistance trailed off at the end of the week. On October 8 there were 5 drone strikes on Israel followed by 4 on October 9 and 5 on October 10. Then there were two days with no incidents. They returned on October 12 but with only 1 drone incident and two more on October 14.
The Sudani government has been pleading with the Resistance to curtail its operations against Israel to stop any kind of retaliation. The factions refused and increased their threats instead. It now appears that the lobbying from Baghdad and Iran finally paid off and they have taken a step back. Whether that will hold is to be seen.
