Security In Iraq Jul 15-21, 2025

Pro-Iranian groups continued attacks upon Kurdish targets during the third week of July. There were three straight days of drone strikes in the country.

Starting on July 15 drones attacked the Sarsang oil field in Dohuk while another drone crashed around the Miran gas field in Sulaymaniya. On July 16 drones hit the Tawke and Ain Sifni oil fields in Dohuk while another was found at the Bai Hassan field in Kirkuk. Finally, on July 17 a drone crashed outside Irbil City and another struck the Sheikhan refinery in Dohuk.

Because of these attacks several oil companies shut down their operations in the Kurdistan Region out of security concerns.

Baghdad launched an investigation into these incidents but refused to reveal many details as usual. Publicly the government said foreign manufactured drones were used and that the groups responsible had been identified and action would be taken against them.

Unofficially the inquiries were marred by politics. The first committee formed by Prime Minister Mohammed Sudani blamed Israel for the attacks. That was rejected by the premier who formed a second committee. Al Aalem reported that it found the group responsible launched drones from Jurf al-Sakhr in Babil. That is a large Kataib Hezbollah base. Nothing will be done because it is part of the government and protected by Iran.

Tehran’s Iraqi allies were humiliated by not taking part in the Iran-Israel War. To save face they began a series of attacks upon Kurds at the start of July because they are seen as pro-Western and pro-Israel.
