There were 520 security incidents in Iraq in May 2017
leading to 2,001 deaths and 1,459 wounded. The disparity between the dead and
injured, the latter should be 2-4 times higher than the former, is due to incomplete
reporting on casualties in Iraq, especially when it comes to government losses
that Baghdad is censoring. As the Mosul battle has winded down so have the
number of incidents. 520 were the fewest recorded in the year. Casualties have
slowly gone down as well in 2017.
Broken down by province there were 268 in Ninewa, 96 in
Baghdad, 44 in Diyala, 43 in Anbar, 29 in Salahaddin, 21 in Kirkuk, 9 in Basra,
6 in Babil, 2 in Dohuk, 2 in Kurdistan, and 1 in Muthanna. Ninewa has led the
nation in incidents since the Mosul campaign started in October 2016. As a
result, violence has dropped off in the rest of the country, especially in
Baghdad that has remained at an all time low. There were just an average of 3.0
incidents per day in the capital governorate when there used to be 8-9. There
was also a rare incident in Muthanna where several car bombs were discovered
and disarmed. They were going to be used against Shiite pilgrims.

The 2,001 dead were made up of 1 general from the Iranian
Revolution Guard, 2 Sahwa, 3 Peshmerga, 13 fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’
Party (PKK), 53 Hashd, 192 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), and
1,737 civilians. The PKK fighters were killed in several air raids by Turkey into Kurdistan. 1,591 of the fatalities occurred in Ninewa, along with 106
in Baghdad, 99 in Anbar, 72 in Kirkuk, 57 in Salahaddin, 32 in Diyala, 24 in
Basra, 15 in Kurdistan, 3 in Dohuk, and 2 in Babil. There were also 3 Sahwa, 32
Peshmerga, 45 Hashd, 134 ISF, and 1,245 injured during the month.
