Security In Iraq Mar 22-28, 2019

(Shafaaq News)

For the fourth week in a row incidents in Iraq were in the teens. That resulted in dramatically low casualties. This was the lowest level of violence ever recorded by Musings On Iraq.

There were only 13 incidents reported in the media from March 22-28, 2019. One was a Turkish air strike that killed 3 Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members in the Qandil Mountains of northern Kurdistan. That left 12 attacks by the Islamic State. Ninewa had the most incidents with just three during the week. In the previous weeks there have been 12 incidents during the third week of March, 19 the second, and 13 the first. These have been the lowest amounts ever recorded. It appears that IS is following its usual pattern of a spring-summer offensive and then dropping off its operations during the winter.

The week had the lowest casualty count ever recorded. 8 people died and 1 was wounded. 3 PKK, 2 Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), 2 civilians, and 1 Hashd al-Shaabi were killed and 1 civilian was injured. Ninewa had the most casualties with 3.

In Anbar the Islamic State once again attacked a group of people collecting truffles. This time it was on the Haditha-Baiji road that left one dead and one wounded. In previous months IS had kidnapped and killed people in the western section of the province looking for truffles. There were also continued reports of IS fighters entering Anbar from Syria and extensive tunnel systems around Qaim by the border.

There were two attacks in Baghdad again after a few weeks of no insurgent activity in the capitol. Both occurred in the outer north. Baghdad used to be the terrorist center of Iraq. Today, as the Islamic State is rebuilding they have almost completely withdrawn from the province. To remain relevant however the group has to eventually return to Baghdad to challenge the government and raise money.

Diyala, Kirkuk, Ninewa and Salahaddin had a total of 9 incidents. That included a suicide bomber killed in the Makhoul Mountains in northwestern Diyala. There were also a warning of IS sniper fire in the Khanaqin district in the northeast and Waqf basin in the west. An IED went off at the offices of Asaib Ahl Al-Haq in Kirkuk city and a police patrol was hit by an IED in the Daquq district in the eastern section of the province. IS launched an attack upon a town in the Sinjar district that included three suicide bombers being killed in Ninewa. Two more such bombers died in another attack in western Ninewa. That province has been the main target of mass casualty attacks for several weeks now.
