(Iraqi News) |
June was the third month of the Islamic State’s new Revenge of the Levant campaign. During the first week of the month however the number of security incidents dipped. The types of attacks conducted showed that the insurgents were still aimed at ramping up pressure upon the locals and security forces.
There was a total of 26 incidents reported in Iraq from June
1-7. That was down from 43 the last full week of May. It was still above most
of the weekly totals from March and April when the number of attacks averaged
in the teens. Diyala with 7 and Anbar with 8 had the most attacks during the
week.

There was a total of 63 casualties during the start of June.
That included 19 deaths made up of 2 Hashd al-Shaabi, 8 civilians and 9 Iraqi
Security Forces (ISF) and another 44 wounded of 9 Hashd, 13 civilians and 22
ISF. Baghdad with 28 had the most casualties.
Anbar had 8 incidents spread across the breadth of the
province. That included five gun battles with the security forces in Rutba in
the west by Jordan, and Hit
and Baghdadi in the east. Three
suicide
bombers
were also killed in Qaim in the west by Syria and Amiriya Fallujah in the east.
Attacks have gone up and down in Anbar. There were only 7 attacks total in May
for instance. Anbar appears to be a secondary front for the Islamic State right
now.
Baghdad has largely been ignored by IS, and there were only
3 incidents during the week, but one was a major attack. On June 4 the security
forces received
a report about an IED in the Tarmiya
district
in the outer north of the province. When they arrived to investigate militants
opened fire upon them with snipers in an ambush
followed by an IED. In total 6 members of the ISF were killed and 15 wounded.
At the end of the week there was another
attack
in that district this time on civilians that left 2 dead and 4 injured. Tarmiya
used to be a hotbed of insurgent activity. March
was the last time there was a similar incident in that district. In order for
IS to remain relevant it has to return to the capital to challenge the
government and to raise more money.
Diyala, Kirkuk, Ninewa, and Salahaddin are the base for the
Islamic State’s rebuilding. There were no incidents reported in Salahaddin. In
Diyala there were 7 including a kidnapping,
and two checkpoints attacked.
One of those attacks occurred in Abu Saida in the west where there are reports
of locals fleeing because of IS activity. Kirkuk had just three incidents
including another assault upon a security
point. Finally, there were 4 incidents in Ninewa. A car bomb
was discovered and dismantled in Mosul. There have been regular attacks on the
city showing that the militants still have access to this major urban area. Two
fields were
also burned and IEDs set nearby to kill and maim those attempting to put the
blazes out. This is a new tactic IS started last month. They are attempting to
enforce taxes upon the farmers and drive some out so that the insurgents can
take over their villages. Gaining towns is important because it allows training
camps to be established so that IS can rebuild its cadres.
