Attacks by the Islamic State in Iraq declined for the second week. There was a spike at the end of April for the annual Ramadan offensive, but it appears that might be over already in the shortest campaign by the group. On the other hand pro-Iran factions are continuing their operations against the United States.
There were a total of 20 incidents recorded in Iraq from May 22-28. 9 of those were by groups working with Iran while 11 were by the Islamic State.
There were 3 deaths and 24 wounded during the week. 1 civilian and 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) were killed and 10 ISF and 14 civilians were injured. Anbar had the most casualties with 12.
Pro-Iran groups hit convoys working for the U.S. in Anbar, Babil, Dhi Qar, Diwaniya, and Muthanna twice. One person was wounded in the incident in Anbar. A roadside bomb was found in Diwaniya as well and disarmed. Rockets were also fired at the Ain Al-Asad base in Anbar, and rockets were discovered in a Baghdad neighborhood and dismantled. There have been a total of 24 incidents by these groups in May. There were 27 the month before. These harassing attacks are meant to limit the movement of U.S. forces in Iraq and their cooperation with the Iraqi forces. They have also recently led American contractors servicing the Iraqi Air Force’s F-16s to leave which will make the planes mostly inoperable.
Islamic State attacks occurred in Anbar (2), Babil (1), Baghdad (2), Diyala (1), Kirkuk (2), Ninewa (1), and Salahaddin (2).
During the first week of May there were 28 attacks by the Islamic State, followed by 25 the next week. Then they dropped to 13 from May 15-21 and just 11 from May 22-28. This could mark the end of IS’s Ramadan offensive. If so it only lasted for one month. That would be the latest sign that the organization is barely holding on in Iraq. Weapons caches are constantly found by the Iraqi forces. The U.S. says it has a large amount of cash. The group could be holding off on large operations while it tries to rebuild. It’s showing over the last year however might mean it simply doesn’t have the assets to carry out attacks even if it wanted to.
The biggest incident of the week was a car bomb in the Haditha district of Anbar. That wounded 9 people. After that there was a shootout in northern Baghdad that led to the death of one soldier, and another in southern Kirkuk that wounded 3 police. After that everything else were IEDs and low level shootings. The vehicle bomb was a rarity. There was one during the third week of April that marked the start of IS’s campaign. Those were the only two for the year. Before that there hadn’t been one since September 2020. During its previous low points the group was always able to deploy a steady pace of car bombs across central Iraq. Now those have almost disappeared once again showing how far the groups has fallen.
