Attacks have remained relatively the same for the Islamic State since the Middle of September. Pro-Iran groups however are back to nearly daily operations against American targets in Iraq.
There were a total of 22 security incidents recorded in Iraq from December 15-21. That was up from 14 the week before and 17 the first week of the month.
8 of those incidents were by pro-Iran factions. Logistics convoys working for the U.S. were hit with IEDs in Anbar, Babil, Basra, and Diwaniya twice. Bombs were also dismantled in Babil and Diwaniya. Most importantly rockets were fired at Baghdad’s Green Zone. In November Turkish military bases were targeted with rockets. The last missile incident in the capital was in October. With the elections over these groups are going back to targeting the U.S. presence which is a major part of Tehran’s foreign policy. There have been a total of 12 such incidents so far this month, up from 10 in November and 5 in October.
14 incidents were by the Islamic State. They occurred in Babil (1), Diyala (7), Irbil (3), Ninewa (1), and Salahaddin (2). During the winter the insurgency routinely decreases its attacks. That’s the reason why incidents have been in the tens and teens for the last 12 weeks.
Those left 11 dead and 12 wounded. 1 Hashd al-Shaabi, 2 civilians, and 8 members of the Iraq Security Forces (ISF) were killed and 1 civilian, 1 Hashd and 10 ISF were injured. Diyala had the most casualties with 14.
A checkpoint in Babil’s Jurf al-Sakhr was hit with an IED which wounded a member of the Hashd. The district is a large Kataib Hezbollah base which IS routinely targets each month.
Ninewa only saw an IED, while there were two gun battles in Salahaddin. One of the latter was in the Tuz Kharmato district in the east which left 3 soldiers dead and two more wounded.
Diyala had the most incidents as usual. Three were shoot outs with the security forces. One confrontation in the Hamrin Mountains caused four casualties amongst the army. A sniper in the Khanaqin district killed 3 soldiers and injured another 2, while another in Muqdadiya shooting at a checkpoint left 3 police wounded. Those two incidents plus the Tuz one in Salahaddin showed a renewed effort by IS to confront the security forces.
Finally, the Islamic State hit Irbil again three times. The group is testing the security gap between the ISF and Peshmerga in the southern section of the province. Despite the very low level of activity during the winter the insurgents are exploring new areas to operate in. Last month they were trying Sulaymaniya. This month, they’re back to Irbil.
