Iraq Sees Highest Oil Prices And Revenues In Months

In August 2023 Iraq benefited from the highest oil prices in 10 months. This is good for the new budget which is the largest in Iraqi history.

In August Iraq averaged 3.423 million barrels a day in oil exports. That was little changed from July’s average of 3.444 million barrels. For the previous months in 2023 Iraq had been averaging between 3.1-3.3 million barrels day. In the last two months it increased to 3.4 million barrels the highest amount in years. This is doubly impressive because the pipeline to Turkey has been shut down for several months now after Ankara got mad that it lost an arbitration case to Baghdad.

The increase in exports coincided with a jump in oil prices. Iraqi crude sold for $83.35 per barrel in August. The last time prices were that high were at the end of 2022 when from September-November prices were in the $80 range.

In turn, that meant Iraq brought in extra high revenues. It earned $8.846 billion in August. That was up from 8.293 billion in July. Again, Iraq had not seen such high profits since October 2022.

Iraq just passed the biggest budget ever with the largest projected deficit. It needs to earn as much money as possible to meet its massive bills. As the most oil dependent country in the world petroleum is the only real source of income to achieve that.
