Security In Iraq July 22-28, 2024

The Islamic State was absent from Iraq for another week while pro-Iran groups focused back upon the United States.

 

From July 22-28 there were no incidents by the Islamic State. This was the 14^th out of 28 weeks this year when the insurgency was not active. For all intense and purposes IS is dead in Iraq.

 

During the week there were two attacks upon Ain Al-Assad airbase in Anbar. The facility was targeted the week before as well. This was the first time since April that Iraqi bases that housed American forces were assaulted by pro-Iran groups.

 

Last week an Iraqi delegation went to Washington D.C. to discuss a U.S. withdrawal. Baghdad asked for American troops to be out by September 2025. Al Mada reported that the ruling Coordination Framework is worried about maintaining the truce between the U.S. and pro-Iran groups so they are leaking stories about a coming withdrawal. It’s obvious that those factions are not happy with the slow pace of talks and are letting all parties know that it can return to weekly attacks at any time.
