Security In Iraq Sep 22-28, 2024

There was no activity by the Islamic State in Iraq during the 4^th week of September. Iraq’s Islamic Resistance however reached a new high in operations against Israel in response to its attacks upon Hezbollah in Lebanon.

 

Since the start of August the Islamic State tried to re-assert itself in Iraq. From August 1 to September 21 there were attacks 6 out of 7 weeks. From September 22-28 however there was no insurgent violence.

 

IS incidents remain at an insignificant level in the country. The group is only averaging 1.3 incidents per week and is barely talked about anymore.

 

In comparison Iraq’s Islamic Resistance reached a new high in assaults upon Israel. During the week there were 18 attacks with 3 cruise missile incidents and 15 drone strikes. That raised the total number of attacks to 22 in September. That surpasses 20 in May.

 

In February the Sudani government and Iran negotiated a ceasefire with pro-Iran groups so that they would stop targeting U.S. forces in Iraq. Afterwards the factions began focusing their attention upon Israel. These have been inconsequential and are symbolic in nature to show that the Iraqi resistance stands with Palestinians. As Israel began assassinating Hezbollah members and bombing Lebanon the Iraqi Resistance increased its activity leading to the current round of attacks in September.
