Security In Iraq Feb 8-14, 2025

The Islamic State returned to Iraq during the second week of February. This was the first time the group had been active in the country for three months.

 

During the second week of February there were 3 incidents involving the Islamic State although only two were actual attacks.

 

In Anbar a sticky bomb destroyed a car belonging to a tribal Hashd commander in the Qaim district in the western section of the province. 2 were wounded including the commander. An IED exploded in Kirkuk injuring 1 civilian. Finally in Salahaddin an old IED detonated killing 1 civilian and wounding 3 more.

 

This was the first time IS launched an actual attack since the middle of November. For all intense and purposes the insurgency is over in Iraq. It is more likely that some old ordinance explodes in Iraq than someone is killed by an Islamic State operation. There are worries that the group will make a comeback by taking advantage of Syria after the fall of the Assad regime but for now there is no sign of that happening in Iraq.
