Iran And Its Iraqi Allies Continue Attacks During Ceasefire

On April 8 the ceasefire went into effect between the U.S. and Iran. Hostilities were supposed to stop in Iraq as well as the Resistance announced a two week halt to operations but they have not. Iranian Kurdish groups have been attacked again and again and most recently a Kuwait border post was hit by an Iraqi drone.

On April 10 the Kurdish Interior Ministry announced that there were still drone attacks upon its territory on April 9 a day after the ceasefire started. That continued over the following days.

On April 14 a drone hit the Komala Party wounding three at Camp Sordash in Sulaymaniya, another one struck the Kurdistan Democratic Party Iran (KDPI) in Koya, Irbil, and two more were shot down by Kurdish security forces over Irbil province.

The next day Iranian missiles were fired at Komala in Zirgwez, Sulaymaniya.

April 16 the Kurdistan Freedom Party and Komala were targeted in Sulaymaniya and Balisan in Irbil.

April 17 a KDPI camp in Irbil was struck by a drone and a missile that killed four including a child. Another camp was also hit with one dead and two injured.

There was a short lull until April 21 when a drone fell apart and landed on two schools for disabled children in Sulaymaniya city.

April 23 a Kurdish camp in Irbil province was hit.

On April 27 two missiles exploded at a Komala camp in Sulaymaniya.

Things really escalated on April 24 however when two Iraqi drones targeted a Kuwait border post in the morning. Afterwards Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt all condemned the act and demanded that Iraq do something.

Baghdad has largely been silent during this entire time. It probably does not want to draw attention to continued Iranian attacks upon its territory and members of the Resistance striking out against a neighboring country. The U.S. for one has sanctioned Iraq demanding that Iranian influence be curtailed and Resistance members be arrested. The Gulf States and Jordan had already complained to Iraq about drone and missiles being fired at them from Iraq during the war. This does nothing but reinforce the image that Iraq is under Iran’s hegemony and a source of instability in the Middle East. It exposes the inherent weakness of Baghdad.
