All five groups that track deaths in Iraq had a decline from
June to July. Iraq Body Count (IBC) went from 1,934 in June to 1,481 in
July. The Iraqi Government had 1,669 deaths in July compared to 1,922
in June. The United Nations had the largest decline going from 2,417 in
June to 1,737
to July. Neither of those numbers included Anbar. The violence there has
kept U.N. officials out of the province. Agence France Presse had the lowest
counts with 996
deaths in June and 585 in July. Finally Musings On Iraq had the most
fatalities with 2,822 in June and 2,195 in July. While the range amongst the
organizations was huge in July they all followed the same trend. All their
statistics went down from June to July.
The drop in deaths was predictable. In June the Islamic
State and other insurgent groups took Mosul and Tikrit and swept across the
three provinces of Ninewa, Salahaddin and Kirkuk. Now the fighting has settled
down a bit and casualties have declined as a result. The real figures are
likely much higher than any recorded in June and July. That’s because the
government has stopped reporting losses in engagements with the insurgents.
There are hundreds of such incidents each month and Baghdad only talks about
how many militants are killed. Those figures seem grossly exaggerated as well. The
few times numbers are released for casualties amongst the Iraqi Security Forces
(ISF) they are usually high especially now that thousands of volunteers are
being thrown into the frontline with little to no training and supplies. The
true numbers may never be known.
