The Islamic State and Pro-Iran groups were both active in Iraq during the start of the new year.
There were a total of 10 security incidents reported in Iraq in the media from January 1-7. that compared to 7 the last full week of December.
The Islamic State carried out 4 incidents during the week. In Baghdad’s north Tarmiya district an IED went off injuring 4 soldiers. That’s the last place in the capitol the insurgency is still active. There were 3 more incidents in Salahaddin. An IED hit a convoy which killed 1 soldier and 1 Hashd al-Shaabi and wounded 2 more soldiers. Two checkpoints were also attacked in the east leaving 1 policeman and 2 Hashd dead and 3 Hashd wounded. All of these incidents were likely meant to intimidate the security forces and keep them out of areas IS still operates in.
There were 6 incidents by the Islamic Resistance. Al-Asad airbase in Anbar was targeted by drones twice as was the Harir airbase in Irbil. Those house U.S. troops and have been hit nearly every week since the Gaza War started in October.
The pro-Iran factions continue to up the ante with two more attacks upon Israel. A cruise missile was launched at Haifa and there was a drone strike upon the Golan Heights. It’s not clear if either was successful. Going after Israel started at the end of December. If one of these incidents caused any casualties Israel would likely retaliate which they‘ve done before.
It's clear that some groups like Kataib Hezbollah would like to escalate things. The U.S. has already hit it and Harakat al-Nujaba for attacks upon U.S. troops in Iraq. Kataib Hezbollah and others use these attacks to claim martyrdom and prove their credentials as being the most anti-American and anti-Israeli. This is opposed by the Iraqi government and many members of the ruling Coordination Framework who believe the ongoing violence is destroying the diplomatic and business environment in the country. It’s also unclear whether Iran wants its proxies to ramp things up which could get out of control.
