Violence remained largely the same in Iraq during the second week of January. Both the Islamic State and pro-Iran groups were active in the country.
There were a total of 7 security incidents reported in the media from January 8-14. That compared to 10 the first week of the month.
The Islamic State carried out 4 operations. There were 4 the week before, 1 the last week of December and 4 the 3rd week of December. That marks a slight increase in activity by the insurgents. From August 8 to December 14 the group was only carrying out an average of 1.1 attacks per week. Still four incidents is nothing compared to what the group was once capable of and another sign of its decline.
In Baghdad’s northern Tarmiya district there was a gun battle with IS members. An IED hit a group of soldiers in Diyala leaving 2 wounded. 4 shepherds were kidnapped in eastern Salahaddin’s Tuz Kharmato district and there was an assault upon the Iraqi forces leaving 3 dead and 1 wounded in the Baiji district in the north.
Pro-Iran groups were responsible for 3 attacks. Western Ninewa’s Rabia area was once again used as a launchpad for rockets aimed at US bases in Syria. Irbil airport was also attacked twice with drones. The week before these factions carried out 6 attacks.
There was a fear that those aligned with Tehran would escalate things after the U.S. retaliated twice against them but that hasn’t happened yet. The assaults remain largely symbolic aimed at showing solidarity with Palestinians while trying to avoid causing any real damage.
