Pro-Iran Groups Continue Their Campaign Against US Forces In Iraq In Dec

Pro-Iran groups which are part of the Iraqi government’s Hashd al-Shaabi forces continued their offensive against US forces in December. The Islamic State was present as well but barely carried out any attacks.

In December there were a total of 35 security incidents reported in Iraq by the media. That was the same figure as November.

The Islamic State was responsible for 9 incidents during the month. That compared to 6 in November. This was the fourth straight month and the sixth month in 2023 where operations by the insurgents were in single digits. From January to June the group carried out 92 attacks or 15.3 per month. That dropped to 42 from July to December or 7.0 per month. IS has ceased to be a threat to the Iraqi state and is only concerned with protecting what little territory it holds which is all in rural, mountainous and desert areas of the country where there are few people.

In December the insurgency carried out 1 attack in Anbar, 2 in north Baghdad’s Tarmiya district, 2 in Kirkuk’s southeastern Daquq district, and 2 in the disputed area of Makhmour in Ninewa. The last was the largest assault of the month as IS attacked a checkpoint killing 1 soldier and rounding 5 others and then got into a gun battle in the same area that injured another 4 soldiers.

In total the Islamic State killed 1 soldier and 1 Hashd and wounded 2 police, 2 Hashd and 9 soldiers during the month.

There were a total of 26 attacks by pro-Iran groups in December. There were 29 in November and 15 in October. There was a short pause in operations as the factions allowed for the provincial elections to occur and then they went back to work. These attacks started as armed groups went after US troops in Iraq for the Biden administration’s support of Israel in the Gaza War.

Al-Asad Airbase in Anbar was struck 8 times with an assortment of drones and rockets. Rockets were fired at the Green Zone in Baghdad twice. Irbil Airport and Harir Airbase were attacked 5 times by drones and two more crashed into Irbil City. Western Ninewa’s Rabia was also used as a launching pad for two rocket strikes on US bases in eastern Syria.

Most importantly these groups launched three unsuccessful attacks upon Israel. A city, a gas platform on the Mediterranean and the Golan Heights were all targeted. This was a huge escalation and could bring about Israeli retaliation.

The U.S. has already struck back twice against Iraqi groups blamed for these attacks. The latest was in the middle of December when it hit three Kataib Hezbollah bases and headquarters in Babil along with Harakat al-Nujaba in Wasit. That resulted in 1 dead and 24 wounded including some Iraqi police and civilians.
