There was barely any violence from the insurgency or pro-Iran groups in March 2024. The Islamic State is disappearing and a ceasefire holds against the United States.
In March there were only 2 security incidents reported in Iraq.
On February 27 a group of Islamic State members was caught by the security forces attempting to infiltrate into Iraq from Syria in the Qaim district of western Anbar. That led to a short gun battle. IS has most of its men and material in Syria and relies upon them being smuggled into Iraq to maintain itself.
1 incident in a month by the insurgency is the lowest amount of violence ever recorded in Iraq. The previous low was 2 incidents in October 2023.
For the first three weeks of February there were no attacks by IS. A similar spate of inactivity occurred in October 2023 when there were also three weeks of no incidents. That was followed by two weeks in November with no activity. From December to January it appeared the militants were trying to make a little revival with several weeks of 4 incidents each but that then fell off showing that the organization continues its slow death in the country.
There was one reported drone strike on Israel by pro-Iran groups on February 5. After that those factions went silent thanks to a ceasefire brokered by Iran and Prime Minister Sudani. Tehran was afraid it would be attacked after its allies killed three U.S. soldiers in Jordan. Sudani also wanted to give negotiations a chance to get the Americans to depart Iraq. So far that agreement has held. This highlights the fact that these groups don’t really care about Palestinians or the Gaza War and are following their own agendas.
Groups associated with Iran began attacks in October with 15 in response to the Gaza War. There were 29 attacks in November, 26 in December and 28 in January before the halt in February.
