Security In Iraq, June 1-7, 2024

The Islamic State disappeared from Iraq once again while pro-Iran groups continued attacks upon Israel.

 

During the first week of June there were no reported incidents in Iraq involving the Islamic State. This was the 9^th full week of the year when there was zero violence by the Islamic State as the group is disappearing from the country.

 

The Iraqi Islamic Resistance claimed 4 drone strikes on Israel. At the start of the year Iran and the Sudani government negotiated a ceasefire with pro-Tehran groups and attacks upon US personnel in Iraq ceased. Starting in March they shifted to attacking Israel and that activity has gone up every month since then.

 

Still some factions are threatening a new wave of operations against the Americans unless the Sudani government negotiations a U.S. withdrawal. Whether this is bluster or an actual threat is yet to be seen.
