Iraq Facing Electricity Crisis This Summer Due To Iran War

  

The Iran War is having far reaching affects upon Iraq. The latest is a looming electricity crisis. This is caused by a cut in Iranian natural gas exports to Baghdad as well as a decline in its own gas production.

The pro-Iran Resistance was active in Kurdistan and Baghdad. A peshmerga headquarters was hit by four drones on April 5. The next day two blasts were heard near Irbil airport. Four missiles were shot down heading towards the U.S. consulate in Irbil city. Multiple drones were also intercepted in Irbil province with debris hitting a residential area killing two civilians. In Baghdad drones targeted the logistics support center at the airport.

The U.S. or Israel bombed the Shalamcheh border crossing between Basra and Iran on the Iranian side. An Iraqi civilian was killed as a result along with five others being wounded.

Iran Has Stopped Supplying Electricity and Natural Gas To Iraq

  

On January 27 it was announced that Iran had stopped electricity exports to Iraq. It claimed this was due to international pressure and regional politics. This comes on top of a halt in natural gas exports by Iran severely cutting power supply in Iraq.

In late December 2024 Iran once again cut off its natural gas exports to Iraq. Baghdad is dependent upon this supply which is delivered completely at the whim of its neighbor.

On the night of November 26 two rockets were fired at the Khor Mor natural gas facility in Sulaymaniya. One rocket fell short but the other hit a storage facility setting off a fire and shutting down operations.

Iraq Is Capturing More Natural Gas While Also Burning More Of It

In June the World Bank reported that Iraq was one of the largest gas burning countries in the world. Iraq and 8 others accounted for 75% of gas flaring. Iraq actually increased this practice in recent years. Gas is emitted from oil fields and if it isn’t captured to be used for commercial use it is burned off which contributes to global warming. This comes as Baghdad claims it is producing more natural gas and that flaring is soon going to come to an end.

In August Iraq announced that it signed a preliminary deal to import natural gas from Turkmenistan. This is supposed to lesson dependency upon Iranian gas which is used to fuel Iraq’s power plants. The problem is there is no infrastructure connecting the two countries and Tehran will likely be opposed.

There was some confusion when on November 5 Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced countries that received waivers from U.S. sanctions on Iran, and Iraq was not mentioned. The Secretary said that China, India, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey could continue to buy Iranian oil. Iraq was not on the list when just three days before it was reported that Baghdad would be allowed to continue to by certain products from Tehran. It now turns out, Pompeo was simply talking about Iran’s oil exports, while Iraq was a separate case.
