It looks like Iraq is moving ahead with a deal to import natural gas and electricity from Turkmenistan despite warnings from the United States that it would violate sanctions on Iran.

Reuters reported that the Trump administration is blocking a deal for Iraq to import natural gas from Turkmenistan because it goes through Iran. This complicates Baghdad’s attempt to diversify its sources of gas to produce electricity.

Iraq To Import Natural Gas From Turkmenistan, Experts Not Impressed


While Turkmenistan’s Minister of State Maksid Babayev was visiting Baghdad Iraq’s Electricity Ministry signed a deal to import natural gas from the Central Asian country. Experts say this will not really do much to meet Iraq’s demand and that it would be better off developing its own gas fields which are far behind schedule.
