The Islamic State remains largely dormant in Iraq. Pro-Iran groups have also stepped back from their operations.
There were only 9 security incidents reported in the media from February 15-21. That compared to 14 the week before and 11 the first week of the month.
Groups aligned with Iran only carried out one incident when grenades were thrown at Speaker Mohammed Halbusi’s Taqadum’s office in the Hit district. This is part of the political violence that started after the October elections. Taqadum is aligned with Moqtada al-Sadr who wants to form a majority government that would exclude members of the Coordination Framework made up of the major Shiite parties besides Sadr’s. They have resorted to attacks to try to intimidate Sadr’s alliance to try to force them to create another national unity government that would include all the victories parties. They have not been successful so far.
There were just 8 incidents by the Islamic State during the week. There have been 8 attacks each week since the start of February. Overall incidents have been in the single digits and teens since the middle of September. That’s five months where the insurgency has mostly been inactive in the country, the longest period since 2003. It’s to the point where IS is having no impact upon Iraq since its operations are so few in number.
As usual almost all the incidents were defensive in nature. There were four IEDs in Diyala and Ninewa, one of which was old leftover from the war. There were also three shootings in Diyala and Kirkuk. The one exception were two bombs dismantled around power towers in Salahaddin. Last summer the militants went after the electricity infrastructure to undermine the standing of the government which has always struggled to provide power to the public. This was the only offensive incident during the week.
