Security Incidents in Iraq went back down to single digits during the third week of August. Pro-Iran groups were back at work but there were very few attacks by the Islamic State.
There were a total of 7 security incidents in Iraq reported in the press from August 15-21. That compared to 14 the second week of August and 9 the first.
There were 2 attacks by pro-Iran groups. Rockets were fired at a Turkish military base in Ninewa which is targeted every month. A convoy working for the U.S. was also bombed in southern Salahaddin. These are aimed at maintaining these groups image as The Resistance standing up for Iraq against foreign occupiers. The previous week there were no incidents by these factions probably because they have been busy with the protests in Baghdad and the deadlocked talks to form a new government.
That left just 5 incidents by the Islamic State during the week. Those took place in Kirkuk (3), Ninewa (1), and Salahaddin (1). 20 of the 31 weeks of the year have seen attacks by the insurgency in single digits. It’s also almost the end of summer and the group has not launched its annual offensive during the season.
The IS attacks left 6 wounded made up of 1 member of the Iraqi Security Forces, 2 civilians and 3 Hashd. There were 2 injured each in Kirkuk, Ninewa and Salahaddin.
There was one offensive operation during the week when a power tower was bombed in Kirkuk. This is a common target during the summer months as it can reduce electricity and increase public anger at the government.
The other four incidents were the usual attacks on checkpoints and IEDs. These are aimed at keeping civilians and the security forces out of IS held areas. That is their main priority as the group is barely holding on in Iraq today.
