The Islamic State slightly picked up its operations in Iraq during the second week of August. Overall, they remained at a very low level. There were also no attacks by pro-Iran groups who are caught up in the demonstrations and counter demonstrations involved with the current political deadlock to form a new government.
There were a total of 14 security incidents by the Islamic State reported in the Iraqi media from August 8-14. Those took place in Diyala (5), Kirkuk (6), Ninewa (1), Salahaddin (2).
They led to 2 dead and 14 wounded. 1 civilian and 1 member of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) were killed and 6 ISF and 8 civilians were injured. There were 8 casualties in Kirkuk, 5 in Diyala and 3 in Salahaddin.
All 14 incidents were defensive in nature. They were the usual mix of shootings, IEDs and attacks on checkpoints. Besides those a suicide bomber was killed in Diyala, and in Kirkuk a mukhtar’s house was bombed and a boy was kidnapped. The goal of these attacks is to maintain control of IS areas in the rural, desert and mountain regions of Iraq. The insurgency is nearly dead and this is the only thing the Islamic State is currently capable of. The summer is almost over and the group hasn’t even been able to launch its annual campaign during this period.
