Security In Iraq Dec 1-7, 2024

Iraq experienced one of those rare weeks at the start of December when there was no violence by either the insurgency or the Iraqi Resistance.

There were no attacks by the Islamic State in Iraq from December 1-7. The last full week of November there were no incidents by the insurgency either.

Since the last full week of September there have only been 3 weeks with attacks by IS versus 7 without. In total there have been 22 out of 45 weeks with no militant activity in 2024.

There were no attacks upon Israel by the Iraqi Resistance during the first week of December either. Those groups were more concerned with pulling their men out of Syria with the fall of the Assad regime. That reportedly happened over the weekend.

This was the first time there were no incidents by the Resistance since September 2023. From October to January 2024 those factions were attacking Iraqi bases that housed U.S. troops. Iran and the Sudani government then negotiated a ceasefire and the pro-Iran groups shifted to attacking Israel. That dramatically increased in September in support of Lebanon’s Hezbollah which suffered a series of devastating leadership losses when it became involved in the Gaza War. Finally at the end of November the Resistance cut its drone strikes on Israel fearing retaliation.
