Attacks in Iraq remained at a very low level for another week. The Islamic State is disappearing while there are only a few incidents by Pro-Iran groups.
There were 4 incidents by armed factions aligned with Tehran. Convoys delivery supplies for the U.S. were hit with IEDs in Basra, Muthanna and Salahaddin. Rockets were also fired at the Balad Air Base in Salahaddin. The last use of missiles was at the start of February when a Turkish base in Ninewa was targeted. There has been a total of 9 incidents by these groups in March. There were 11 in February and 31 in January. These groups have been winding down their operations because they are more concerned about forming the next government.
There were 6 incidents by the Islamic State in Diyala (1), Kirkuk (2), Ninewa (3) and Salahaddin (1).
The previous week there were 14 attacks by the insurgents. Incidents by IS have been in the single digits or teens for 6 months now. That is the fewest number of incidents by the insurgency and the longest period the militants have been dormant since 2003.
These incidents led to 5 deaths and 6 wounded. 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 3 civilians were killed while 3 civilians and 3 ISF were injured.
As usual IS concentrated upon defensive attacks aimed at keeping civilians and the government out of areas it operates in. In the Khanaqin district in northeast Diyala a grenade was thrown at a house. There was an IED and a checkpoint was shot at in Kirkuk that left 2 ISF dead and 3 ISF wounded. There was a shooting and two IEDs in Ninewa, one of which was a leftover from the war versus IS. An old bomb also went off in Salahaddin. That meant there were only 4 actual attacks by IS during the week. These occurred in rural areas of Iraq. This is another sign that the Islamic State is no longer relevant to the country since it has no real impact upon civilians or the authorities.
