The Islamic State has a new leader and the group went back to its usual pace of operations at Iraq. That being said it was still at a very low level compared to previous periods. Pro-Iran groups also carried out very few attacks and Tehran fired a salvo of missiles at Irbil as well.
Three convoys working for the U.S. were hit by IEDs laid by groups aligned with Iran during the week of March 8-14. One convoy was bombed in Diwaniya and two in Dhi Qar. These factions have largely been dormant over the last two months. That’s likely because they are focused upon forming the next government. There have been a total of 5 incidents by these groups in March. In February there were 11.
Iran fired rockets at Irbil city. One person was wounded in the process. Tehran claimed it was hitting Israeli bases in the city. It could also be a warning to the Kurdistan Democratic Party over its alliance with Moqtada al-Sadr who wants to form a majority government and exclude several of Iran’s allies in the process.
There were 14 incidents by the Islamic State during the week. For the last five weeks attacks have been in the single digits. Before that however they were in the teens so this was a return to the norm. Still, that is a very low amount compared to what the group used to be responsible for.
The attacks happened in Babil (1), Diyala (4), Kirkuk (4), Ninewa (3) and Salahaddin (2).
They left 6 dead and 5 wounded. 3 civilians and 3 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) were killed, while 1 Hashd al-Shaabi, 2 ISF and 2 civilians were injured.
Most IS attacks were defensive in nature but there were a few exceptions. An IED wounded a soldier in Babil’s Jurf al-Sakhr district. An army base was shot at by a sniper in southern Diyala that injured a soldier. The biggest incident was an assassination attempt on the Salahaddin Operations Commander with an IED which failed.
The other 11 incidents were all aimed at keeping out civilians and the security forces from insurgent controlled areas such as a village in Kirkuk’s Daquq district being attacked which was aimed at driving out the population. Almost all these incidents took place in rural and mountainous regions where there are few people and little government presence. That means the insurgency continues to be largely ineffective in impacting the country despite the increase in attacks.
