Security In Iraq Jul 22-28, 2020

Security in Iraq remained at a very low level after the Islamic State’s annual Spring offensive. There were 13 incidents total reported in the media. Five of those were by pro-Iran groups targeting the U.S. That left just 8 incidents by the Islamic State. This was the second time this year that attacks by the militants were in single digits. This has now become routine in the country. There is a huge surge of violence once or twice a year and then a large drop afterwards.

Stern, Jessica and Berger, J.M., ISIS The State of Terror, New York: Harper Collins, 2015

The rise of the Islamic State to international prominence in 2014 with its seizure of Mosul, Iraq and the declaration of its caliphate led to a cottage industry of western books on the group. ISIS The State of Terror by Jessica Stern and J.M. Berger was one example coming out in 2015. It tried to compare the Islamic State to the larger jihadist movement, highlighting the differences between IS and Al Qaeda. It also talked about its unique use of violence and the Internet. Overall, the book is a bit uneven. The first half on the history of the Islamic State and its differences with Al Qaeda is good. The second part not so much as it tends to lose focus.

Pro-Iran Hashd Factions Continue To Defy Iraq’s PM

Pro-Iran groups are in their seventh phase of attacks upon U.S. and foreign targets in Iraq. Originally these were organized by Tehran to get the Iraqi government to expel American forces. Then they increased in number when Baghdad and Washington opened talks for a new security agreement which Iran opposed. Now they are a direct challenge to the authority of Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi as well who said he would stop such incidents from happening.
